Timo Salonen by doctorreplen Timo Salonen by doctorreplen

Front cover photo of Autosport Magazine January 16th 1986.

Salonen became World Rally Champion in 1985 and is pictured here driving a Peugeot 205 Turbo 16.

Although he was a very talented driver in 1985, he was up against the world's finest drivers such as Stig Blomqvist (2nd), Walter Rohrl (3rd) and Ari Vatanen (4th).

He was a very good driver indeed and the Pug a real beast.

In the article and the interview he came across as a very modest man who passed on much of the praise he received  to his crew etc..

He did say the Pug liked to "fly" and it had to be modified to stop it leaving the ground at every bump etc..!

Mind you they weren't called "Flying Finns" for nothing.

OKI!

An that era Finns was the only ones mad enough to handle those beasts. For ages Finns was the only ones to win in their local WM rally.

I think it's Vatanen who wasn't good at English, so when he wasn't in front and was asked what to do the answer always was "I'll maximum attack"

I tend to agree.

I hope that you don't turn to Finish in the Rover :lmao:

OH!

Sounds like a plan, would be great to see the Rover coming around a corner in a perfect 4 wheel drift...

Damned couldn't find any good Rover 75 drifting clips.. Almost any model but no 75s

Thanks for that and the fave!

I think he took everyone by surprise and Peugeot must have pulled out all the stops with that 205!
